Cold Cast Bronze vs Solid Bronze: What's the Difference?
2 October 2026 · 5 min read
Cold cast bronze is resin mixed with fine bronze powder, poured into a mould and left to set at room temperature. Solid bronze, sometimes called hot cast or foundry bronze, is the real metal: copper and tin melted at over 1,000°C and cast in one piece. From a few feet away they can look almost identical. Pick them up and the difference is obvious.
If you are shopping for an 8th anniversary gift, or just trying to work out what you are paying for, here is what each one actually is, how to tell them apart, and which makes more sense as a present.
What is cold cast bronze?
Think of it as a very convincing coating. A maker blends bronze powder into a polyester or epoxy resin, brushes or pours it into a mould, and lets it cure. Nothing is heated, which is where the "cold" comes from. Once it is out of the mould, the surface is rubbed back so the metal particles catch the light, and a patina is often added to age it.
Done well, it is lovely. It holds fine detail, it is far cheaper than foundry work, and it is light enough to hang on a wall. That is why so many garden ornaments, trophies and collectable figures are made this way. The catch is that it is mostly resin. Drop it on a tiled floor and it can chip, and a chip shows a pale core rather than more bronze underneath.
What is solid bronze?
Solid bronze is an alloy, usually around 88% copper and 12% tin, though recipes vary. It is cast hot, most often using the lost-wax method: a wax model is coated in a heat-proof shell, the wax is melted out, and molten bronze is poured into the space it left. When it cools, the shell is broken away and the piece is cleaned, chased and finished by hand.
It is heavier, tougher and noticeably more expensive. It also changes over time. Bronze develops a warm patina as it meets the air, and many people love it for exactly that. If you are worried about it turning green, our guide to whether bronze jewellery tarnishes explains what is normal and how to keep it looking its best.
How to tell cold cast bronze from solid bronze
You do not need any special kit. Five quick checks will usually settle it:
- Weight. Solid bronze is dense. A small figure that feels surprisingly light is almost certainly resin.
- Temperature. Metal feels cool when you first touch it and warms slowly in your hand. Resin feels closer to room temperature straight away.
- Sound. Tap it gently with a fingernail or a coin. Metal gives a short ring; resin gives a dull click.
- The base. Turn it over. Cold cast pieces often have a flat, painted or felt-covered underside, or show a different colour where the resin is exposed.
- The wording. Read the listing closely. "Bronze resin", "bronzed", "cold cast" and "bronze finish" all mean the same thing: not solid metal.
Price is a clue too. A large, detailed foundry bronze at a bargain price is worth a second look.
Does cold cast bronze count for a bronze anniversary?
Bronze is the traditional gift for the 8th wedding anniversary, and in the UK it is linked with the 19th as well. Cold cast does contain real bronze, so strictly speaking it ticks the box. But the whole point of the bronze anniversary symbolism is that two metals combine into something stronger than either on its own. A gift that is mostly plastic sits a little awkwardly with that idea.
Our view, for what it is worth: if the bronze is the point of the present, choose the real metal. If you simply love a particular cold cast sculpture, buy it and enjoy it. Just know what you are getting, and do not pay solid bronze prices for it.
What our pieces are made from
Everything in our bronze jewellery and bronze cufflinks collections is metal, worked by hand in the UK. The figures in our bronze anniversary sculptures are cast bronze, set on a natural wooden base, so each batch carries small differences in texture. That variation is a good sign. It is what handmade metal looks like.
If you are still deciding what to buy, our round-up of bronze anniversary gifts covers every budget, and there are separate edits of 8th anniversary gifts for her and 8th anniversary gifts for him. Celebrating nineteen years instead? Have a look at our 19th anniversary gifts.

Frequently asked questions
Is cold cast bronze real bronze?
Partly. It contains real bronze powder, but it is mixed into a resin binder, so most of the piece is resin rather than metal. It looks like bronze on the surface, weighs far less and can chip to show a paler core.
Is cold cast bronze worth buying?
It can be, if you love the design and the price reflects what it is. It holds detail well and costs much less than foundry bronze. Just avoid paying solid bronze prices for a cold cast piece.
How can I tell if something is solid bronze?
Check the weight, the temperature and the sound. Solid bronze is heavy, feels cool to the touch and rings when tapped. Resin pieces feel light, warm up quickly and give a dull click. Listings that say "bronze resin" or "cold cast" are not solid metal.
Is cold cast bronze a good 8th anniversary gift?
It technically fits, because it contains bronze. But the bronze anniversary is about two metals combining into something stronger, so if the symbolism matters, a piece made from the metal itself, such as bronze jewellery or cast bronze figures, is the better fit.
